Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily on Sunday voiced concern over the country's political stalemate, urging the formation of a unified government to pave the way for holding elections.

Bathily had a meeting with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah, during which they examined Libya's political, security and economic situation, and discussed ways to move the political process forward through a political settlement.

"I reiterated my concern regarding the current political stalemate and its consequences on the security and economic situation of ordinary Libyans and renewed my call on all Libyan leaders to rise to the challenge and agree on a unified government to lead the country to elections," said Bathily on X.

During a meeting with members of the High Council of State on Saturday, Bathily emphasized the urgent need to implement the election laws and form a unified government.

Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as scheduled due to disagreements over election laws among Libyan parties.
