Carlos Alcaraz of Spain beat Fabian Marozsan of Hungary 6-3, 6-3 in the Indian Wells on Tuesday to clinch his 50th Masters 1000 win en route to a title defense.

The Spaniard, who is now the highest ranked seed in the tournament after Novak Djokovic was stunned by Italian youngster Luca Nardi a day ago, was in control throughout the match, pounding forehands and never losing his serve.

A crosscourt forehand on match point sealed the win and Alcaraz, who has said his only goal is to win the tournament again, had only a muted reaction after advancing, nodding to his team and yelling "Vamos."

Marozsan was a qualifier when he stunned Alcaraz in straight sets in the Italian Open last May, but Alcaraz turned the tables on center court with a clinical and comprehensive win.

"Honestly, I was nervous before the match. I'm not going to lie," Alcaraz said.

"Playing against someone who beat you easily... I remember I had no chances in the match in Rome. It was difficult for me today to approach the match, but I'm really happy with the way that I did."

On the women's side, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland eased into her third consecutive quarterfinal in California after defeating Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-2 to set up her next match against former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who advanced to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 2019 by defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-2 upon her return to the competition.
