For over 400 years, Minju Opera has vividly depicted the life of people in Fuzhou; their culture, customs and stories. However, in the 1980s, it was in decline. Audiences had dwindled, the artists were poorly paid, and the training school was forced to stop enrolling students. Xi Jinping, when he became Fuzhou Party Secretary in April 1990, immediately set about improving the situation. Before long, the Minju Opera School had reopened with a new building and public interest had experienced a resurgence. With young people forming a significant part of the new audience, it seems the future of this local opera sung in the Fuzhou dialect is assured.
