China's Yuan Yue reached the quarterfinal of a Masters 1000 event for the first time after defeating Russia's 11th seed Daria Kasatkina in full sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. Currently ranked 49th in the world, the 25-year-old will effectively rise to the 37th place next week.
Yuan is now the only remaining Chinese female player in Indian Wells. Her next match against local favorite Coco Gauff, who outclassed Belgium's Elise Mertens 6-0, 6-2.

In a span of two and a half hours, the Austin Open champion came back from one set and 3-1 down to extend her winning streak to nine matches, including an all-Chinese second-round win in the California desert against Australian Open runner-up Zheng Qinwen. She also downed Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-1 and American Caroline Dolehide 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) earlier this week.
"I am super happy today. Even though I felt tired during the match, I kept my confidence that I could do well," she said.
"I made too many mistakes in the first set, but I adjusted myself well in the second set."

Earlier on Wednesday, local Emma Novarro stunned second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to record the biggest win of her career.
Navarro came out flying to grab the first set before Sabalenka raised her level in the second to force a decider.
The even-keeled Navarro kept her cool in the final set, fending off a break point and smacking a forehand winner for a crucial service hold and a 4-1 lead.
Navarro, seeded 23rd, broke the hard-hitting Australian Open champion for a fourth time on match point.
