China's first domestically built polar icebreaker, Xuelong 2 (Snow Dragon 2), is scheduled to visit the country's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) next month, as announced by the event organizer on Saturday.

The vessel will make its inaugural appearance in Hong Kong on April 8 for a five-day visit, accompanied by several top-tier scientists, including the team leader of China's 40th Antarctic expedition, stated Ho Kin-chung, chairman of the event's executive committee.

Xuelong 2 will be open for public visits free of charge from April 9 to 12, with a series of events planned during its stay.

Xuelong 2 is China's fourth polar research vessel, following Xiangyanghong 10, Jidi, and Xuelong. It measures 122.5 meters in length, with a displacement of nearly 14,000 tonnes and a total installed power of 23.2 megawatts, capable of accommodating 101 crew members.

The vessel is equipped to conduct scientific research in regions with high ice density and gather data on hydrology, chemistry, and ecology. It embarked on its maiden voyage to the Antarctic in 2019 as part of China's 36th Antarctic expedition and participated in the country's 40th Antarctic expedition last December.

Currently, the vessel is en route back to China after retrieving the expedition members from the Qinling Station in early March.
