Spain's Carlos Alcaraz beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (5) and 6-1 in the men's singles final at the BNP Paribas Open (formerly known as the Indian Wells Open) on Sunday, successfully defending his title.

It was Alcaraz's first title since he won Wimbledon in 2023. He also became the first man since Serbia's Novak Djokovic to defend the BNP Paribas Open trophy.

Having sprained his ankle at the Rio Open in late February, Alcaraz only worked 30 minutes in his first practice in Indian Wells.

"After every match I was feeling better," he said. "I was getting more confident after every match. Winning a Master 1000 again, a really important tournament to win, gives you motivation to keep going."

"It's definitely your court, you like it here," Russia's Medvedev told Alcaraz at the award ceremony. "Hopefully you can one day let me play a little bit better here."

The BNP Paribas Open women's singles title was secured by Poland's Iga Swiatek after she defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4 and 6-0 in the final on Sunday. The two faced each other in the tournament's final in 2022 when Swiatek beat Greece's Sakkari 6-4 and 6-1. Sakkari hasn't beaten Swiatek since 2021.

"Hard to compare because I remember that last time I was coming as world number two," Swiatek said after Sunday's victory. "A lot has happened since then."

Swiatek has been exceptionally dominant recently. Not only does she have a 20-2 record in 2024, she lost only 21 games in her six matches at the BNP Paribas Open.

"Sorry I couldn't put on a better fight," Sakkari said after the loss.
