Nothing ignites the exhilaration in sports quite like witnessing a major tournament awaken a dormant giant from its slumber. The 2024 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships provided a gripping spectacle as China orchestrated a remarkable comeback. After clinching just one gold medal in the previous edition, they staged a breathtaking turnaround, sweeping an impressive four golds in a sensational display of dominance.
The Asian powerhouse showcased their unwavering resilience throughout the weekend, with Lin Xiaojun claiming the individual gold in the 500m and Sun Long seizing victory in the fiercely contested 1500m race on Saturday. As the competition drew to a close on Sunday night, China's triumph was sealed with resounding wins in two team events, adding the final touch to a truly memorable outing for the nation.
In a thrilling final of the mixed team relay, the Chinese skaters extended their winning streak with a masterful performance. Seasoned veteran Fan Kexin took off from the third lane, bursting out of the gates and quickly securing second position. Throughout the race, the Chinese team stayed hot on the heels of the Netherlands, spending most of the time in second.

However, with just five laps remaining, the leader of the Dutch team made a critical error, losing control around a turn and crashing off the track. Seizing the opportunity, Gong Li skillfully glided into the lead. The baton was then passed to Liu Shaoang and Lin Xiaojun, who calmly maintained their grip on the top spot. With seamless teamwork, the Chinese team crossed the finish line ahead of the competition, claiming a well-deserved victory and capturing the mixed crown.
China then capped off an extraordinary night by retaining their men's 5,000m relay world title with a display of sheer brilliance. In the final race, the Chinese team implemented a strategic "follow and overtake" approach, patiently biding their time. It wasn't until 20 laps were remaining that Sun made his move, surging past his competitors to claim the top spot.
Although the South Korean team managed to briefly regain the lead, Liu Shaoang and Liu Shaolin remained composed and resolute, refusing to let go. With just two laps to go, Lin Xiaojun emerged as the hero once again, executing a daring overtake amidst a turn and holding onto the lead to the finish line.

China's victory in the 5,000m relay marked Liu Shaoang and Liu Shaolin's first world title since switching their allegiance from Hungary to China. Radiating with sheer joy, Shaolin couldn't contain his elation as he shared his thoughts. "I am absolutely delighted," he exclaimed. "Our team was amazing. We worked together tirelessly, and the progress we made in the past few weeks was truly worth it."
Shaolin went on to reveal his intention of wholeheartedly embracing the moment, despite his admitted lack of vocal prowess. "We proudly wore the Chinese flag, and we will sing the national anthem with pride," he declared.
With a good-natured sense of humor, he added, "I must confess that I am not the best singer, but I know the anthem by heart. Our father, being Chinese, taught it to us when we were young. So, I will join my team in singing it proudly... I won't be starting a karaoke career anytime soon, perhaps I'll belt it out in the shower."
