The benefits to the environment of planting trees are well known. But tree-planting is also becoming established in the field of diplomacy. In May 2023, for example, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the leaders of five Central Asian countries planted six pomegranate trees following the conclusion of the first China-Central Asia Summit in Xi'an.
The trees were specially chosen, as pomegranates symbolize not only good fortune, friendship and prosperity, but also the desire for close cooperation shared by China and Central Asia. Over the years, from pines to ginkgoes, spruces to oaks and crab apple trees, trees planted by President Xi Jinping and other heads of state and foreign dignitaries have highlighted the importance of promoting international friendship, cooperation and joint development.
