Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region continues to witness robust population growth, buoyed by a landscape of enduring social stability. Recent data underscores this trend, revealing a region characterized by demographic resilience and improving public health indicators.

As of the seventh national census conducted in 2020, Xinjiang has a population of 25.9 million, with the Uygur ethnic group accounting for approximately 11.6 million, making them the largest ethnic group in the region. Notably, Xinjiang is home to all 56 of the nation's ethnic groups. Among these, Uygur, Han, Kazak, Hui and Kirgiz communities are the most prominent.

Xinjiang exhibits a comparatively youthful demographic profile. In 2020, the region's proportion of individuals aged 0-14 surpassed the national average by 4.51 percentage points, while its share of those aged 60 and above trailed the national figure by 7.42 percentage points. The Uygur population has more young individuals than the overall regional demographic, hinting at potentially long-term vitality.

Over the past two decades, the region has witnessed remarkable improvements in key health metrics. Between 2000 and 2023, the average life expectancy surged by 8.6 years to reach 76, underscoring enhanced well-being and longevity. Equally noteworthy are the substantial declines in infant mortality rate, mortality rate for children under five years of age, and maternal mortality rate.
