Free agent pitcher and 2023 National League (NL) Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has signed with the San Francisco Giants on a two-year, $62 million contract, according to ESPN on Monday.
In his eighth season in Major League Baseball (MLB) and third season with the San Diego Padres in 2023, Snell posted an earned run average (ERA) of 2.25 with a 14-9 record in 32 games. Such stellar performances earned him the second Cy Young Award, which is for the best pitcher in the league, after he won it for the first time in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
In 2018, Snell achieved his MLB All-Star debut and was both the American League (AL) wins leader (21) and the ERA leader (career-high 1.89). In 2023, he was selected for the All-MLB First Team for the first time in his career.

The lack of consistent dominance explains why it took Snell such a long time to secure a deal on the free agency market, as well as why it wasn't a long-term, substantial one. This signing is very much like what Matt Chapman inked with the Giants. The annual salary they will receive will be higher than that of a long contract, and the short deal will give them a quick return to the free agency market, where they can negotiate a better deal if they play well in the 2024 or 2025 campaigns.
The Giants completed a series of signings during the offseason, including acquiring South Korean rising star Lee Jung-hoo on a six-year, $113 million contract. They are just 10 days from starting the 2024 regular season by playing Snell's former employer, the Padres, at Petco Park in San Diego, California, on March 28.
