First built in 1707, Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace, used to serve as the imperial garden for six emperors during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and has been reputed as the "Garden of Gardens" for displaying both Eastern and Western aesthetics. To showcase the former glory of the garden-palace, a grand exhibition has opened at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

Titled "Yuanmingyuan — Art and Culture of an Imperial Garden-Palace," the exhibition was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Palace Museum and the Yuanmingyuan Administration Office of Beijing's Haidian District. It is the second time that Hong Kong Palace Museum hosts an exhibition of the precious collections of the Palace Museum since its opening in July 2022.

Featuring more than 190 pieces or sets of cultural artifacts, including paintings, calligraphy works and utensils, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the life and aesthetics tastes of the emperors as well as the design of the garden-palace. Some of the exhibits were unearthed in recent years and were displayed outside the Old Summer Palace for the first time, according to the Yuanmingyuan Administration Office.

During the exhibition, multimedia technology will be applied, allowing viewers to vividly experience the history, culture and artistry related to the Old Summer Palace.
Officially opened to the public on March 20, the exhibition will run until August 12.
