Brazilian scholar: The West is facing crisis of legitimacy as more people fall in poverty

Addressing the differences between democracies in different countries, Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, head of the Brazil-China Research Group at Getulio Vargas Foundation School of Law in Rio de Janeiro, believes China is people-centered thus brought tremendous improvement for its citizens in the past 40 years. 

He said that during an interview with CGTN while attending the third International Forum on Democracy: The Shared Human Values in Beijing on March 20. He further explains that democracies in some Western countries are facing a crisis of legitimacy since the number of its people falling into poverty keeps rising.

"They (people in some Western countries) can have the right to vote, but they don't have the right to have a livelihood with dignity," Carvalho said.
