The Chinese rifle and pistol team have consistently proven themselves as a formidable force in international competitions. Their superlative performance at the Tokyo Olympics, where they secured an impressive tally of four gold medals, one silver and four bronze, inevitably catapulted them into the spotlight.

It's no wonder, then, that the question of which shooters will earn a coveted spot on China's roster for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games has become a topic of eager anticipation. With summer just around the corner, the official squad has finally been revealed following the conclusion of the national trials' final stage on Wednesday.

Li Yuehong, the reigning world champion in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event, brings a wealth of experience to the star-studded roster as the oldest shooter. At 34 years old, this two-time Olympic bronze medalist is poised to make his third bid for the gold medal in Paris. Conversely, the youngest member of the team is 17-year-old Liang Xiaoya, who will be making her Olympic debut in the women's 25m pistol event.

China's quest for the men's and women's 10m air pistol gold medals will be spearheaded by world champions Zhang Bowen and Jiang Ranxin. Zhang, who reached the men's final in Tokyo but finished sixth, is determined to make amends in Paris.

On the other hand, Jiang had a memorable Olympic debut, bagging an individual bronze and a mixed team gold. Accompanying them are Xie Yu and Li Xue, the reigning World Cup Final champion.

Meanwhile, Sheng Lihao, the 16-year-old wunderkind who clinched a silver medal in Tokyo, is gearing up for his second Olympics. Joining him in the men's 10m air rifle event is the 20-year-old Du Linshu, who will also represent China in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions alongside Liu Yukun. This trio exemplifies the depth of talent within the Chinese shooting team.

In the women's 10m air rifle category, 17-year-old Huang Yuting emerged triumphant in the final trial competition, surpassing teammate Han Jiayu to claim the top spot in the rankings. Both Huang and Han have secured their well-deserved tickets to the Paris Games. It's worth noting that Han has also earned her place in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event. Additionally, the reigning world champion Zhang Qiongyue stands as an odds-on favorite in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions.

According to Wang Lian, the vice director of China's Shooting and Archery Management Center, this combination of seasoned athletes and emerging talents is primed to deliver an exhilarating showcase of skill, unwavering determination and a deep sense of national pride.

"Our process of selecting Olympic athletes is not just about choosing participants, but also about cultivating and honing their skills," observed Wang. "The athletes have faced tremendous pressure and have overcome it, carving their path to success."

"They have consistently displayed exceptional performance, pushing themselves to new heights. Every single athlete who made the cut has endured this arduous journey, which has been instrumental in their growth and maintaining their peak condition."

"In the national trials, we shattered 12 world records and equalled two more. It is a testament to the improved training levels during our winter preparations. Looking ahead, it is imperative that we sustain our momentum and deliver exceptional performances on the Olympic stage."

Wang also drove home a crucial message, highlighting that the Chinese shooting team, when performing up to their potential, can achieve great success in Paris.

"Although we face formidable opponents, our toughest battle lies within ourselves," he said. "As we enter the final phase of preparations, it's vital for the entire team to stay focused, remain true to ourselves, and strive for excellence. I'm deeply convinced that we'll achieve remarkable results and bring glory to our nation once again."
