The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted the first global resolution on artificial intelligence (AI). The resolution encourages countries to safeguard human rights and protect and monitor AI for risks. It calls on member states and invites other stakeholders to take action to cooperate with and provide assistance to developing countries toward inclusive and equitable access to the benefits of digital transformation and safe AI systems.
The resolution is the latest in a series of initiatives by governments around the world to shape AI's development. There are fears AI could be used to disrupt democratic processes or lead to dramatic job losses, among other things. The resolution was proposed by the U.S. and co-sponsored by China and 122 other nations.
