Twenty-four Chinese nationals have been evacuated to the Dominican Republic from Haiti amid growing tensions, Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Responding to an inquiry on Monday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that it assisted in the safe evacuation of Chinese nationals in the Caribbean country who are willing to leave.

Haiti has been rocked by a surge in gang violence since late February when armed groups raided police stations, prisons and airports.

The violence has also exacerbated an already grim humanitarian situation in the country as the UN warned that nearly half of the country's population -- 5.5 million people – is in need of humanitarian aid.
