According to the bird list of Hainan Island published by Haikou Duotan Wetland Research Institute in 2022, there are 453 types of wild birds living on the southern Chinese island, and 121 of them are under state protection. Some birds have "Hainan" in their names and are native to the island.
The most notable one is the Hainan peacock-pheasant with its dazzling emerald coat. The bird usually makes loud and scratching noises when flipping and scuffling leaves to find food. Native to central and southwestern Hainan, the bird is under first-class state protection in China and listed Endangered by IUCN Red List.

Similarly under first-class state protection is the Hainan partridge. It often inhabits the primary evergreen forests at the altitude of 700 to 900 meters. It was once suggested to be the provincial bird of Hainan by ornithologists because of its uniqueness and rarity.
Unlike the other two, the Hainan leaf warbler stands out in the forest with a luminous yellow color. They are often seen in flocks and, when foraging, there will always be one on the lookout for danger, which might be their secret to surviving in the jungle.
