A major bridge in Baltimore, U.S. collapsed early Tuesday morning local time after a large cargo ship struck a support column, sending vehicles and people plunging into the Patapsco River below.

The Baltimore City Fire Department is calling it a mass casualty incident, with up to 20 people feared missing. Two people have been pulled from the water, one with serious injuries. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

"This is a mass-casualty, multi-agency event," said Kevin Cartwright, the Baltimore City Fire Department spokesperson. "This operation is going to extend for many days."

Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and is working with the federal government to secure additional resources for the rescue and recovery effort.

"All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured," the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X.

The cause of the collision between the bridge and the Singapore-flagged container ship, the "Dali," is still under investigation. The ship's manager, Synergy Marine Group, has confirmed none of the crew sustained injuries.

The collapsed bridge is named Francis Scott Key Bridge, which carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River. The bridge, named after the author of the U.S. national anthem, opened in 1977.

Baltimore is the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, and the closure of the Key Bridge is expected to have a significant impact on port operations.
