South China's Hainan Island is a tropical haven of biodiversity. Covering only 0.4 percent of China's total land area, it is home to more than a tenth of the country's insects, many of which are unique to the island.

In the rainforests of Hainan, there are various insects with amazing skills. 

Barely the length of a matchstick, the phoenix damselfly keeps its hind wings motionless while airborne. Smaller than a peanut kernel, Haania vitalisi is barely visible in the moss. Another master of disguise deserves to be the walking stick, as it can remain still, like part of a plant. The Gigantometra gigas is a fast runner on water that is able to sprint at 2 meters per second.
