Japanese artist's 'Time Machine' exhibition arrives in Beijing

Well-known for his monochrome photographs, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto's solo exhibition "Time Machine" is now on at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing and runs until June 23 this year.

It features 11 series and 127 pieces in a systematic presentation of Sugimoto's works since 1974, also marking the photographer's first major institutional solo exhibition in the Chinese mainland.

Among the works on display are his earlier signature "Seascapes," "Theaters," "Lightning Fields," and "Portraits" series. And for the first-time worldwide, a newly created darkroom calligraphy is also being exhibited.

It features the Chinese characters of the Buddhist scripture "The Heart Sutra." Without using a lens, Sugimoto used expired photographic paper directly as his medium, on which he wrote down the calligraphy in a darkroom. It is also one of his new explorations in photography.
