China urged the United States to play a constructive role in safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea during a recent phone call between senior diplomats of the two countries.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu spoke with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell over the phone at the U.S. side's request on Wednesday.

Briefing reporters about the call, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Friday that the two sides exchanged views on the current China-U.S. relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest.

During the talk, Ma elaborated on China's position on Taiwan, Hong Kong, the South China Sea, and economic, trade, scientific and technological issues, Lin said.

According to the spokesperson, Ma asked the U.S. side to seriously abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques and respect China's core interests.

He also called on the U.S. to stop turning economic, trade, scientific and technological issues into political and security issues and stop irresponsibly pointing fingers at Hong Kong, said the spokesperson.

The Chinese vice foreign minister also stated China's principled position on the Korean Peninsula issue and the Ukraine crisis during the call.
