American monster-verse epic film roars in Chinese cinemas

American filmmaker Adam Wingard's second "Godzilla x Kong"movie began its rollout in China on Friday, with its presale box office already having almost reached 40 million yuan (approximately US$5.5 million).

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" now far leads the Chinese box office chart, according to data from box office tracker Maoyan, following a wave of promotions including the film's premiere in Beijing and a screening event for industry insiders held by IMAX China to showcase a visually stunning experience ahead of the wider release.

The first installment of "Godzilla x Kong" earned 1.23 billion yuan (approximately US$170.5 million) in its box office takings in the Chinese mainland in 2021.

Chinese cinemas saw a flock of Hollywood blockbusters in March, including sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two," which was released on March 8 following a re-release of the first "Dune" film and DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4," which opened in China on March 22.
