In Buddhism, nianhua, literally meaning "picking up a (lotus) flower," relates to the Flower Sermon story of that faith. The place where Nianhuawan is located resembles a lotus flower, and is a Buddhist spot, thus leading to the small town being named Nianhuawan, with "wan" meaning bay as it is close to Taihu Lake.
