Chinese researchers discovered a new horned toad species during a field survey recently in the Lianhua Mountains in eastern Guangdong Province. The findings were published on March 15 in the journal Asian Herpetological Research.

The new species found in the high-altitude mountainous area was named Boulenophrys elongata by the research team from Guangdong Polytechnic of Environmental Protection Engineering.

The discovery of the species increases the known diversity of the genus Boulenophrys in eastern Guangdong to six species, of which five are distributed in the central to northern Lianhua Mountains of Guangdong.

The toad inhabits flowing montane streams at an altitude of 700 to 1,000 meters and the nearby forest floor in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest. Also, the species' slender body and limbs are significantly different from other known species of the genus Boulenophrys, according to Lin Shishi, one of the authors of the paper.
