A set of 1,300-year-old "matryoshka boxes" has gone on display at the Shanxi Museum in Taiyuan, capital of northern China's Shanxi Province. The five boxes decreasing in size are made of stone, wood, bronze, silver and gold. It is believed that the containers were made to hold Sarira, or Buddhist relics, in the Tang Dynasty (618–907) era. The boxes were excavated in 2008 near a temple in Taiyuan, underneath a pagoda that once stood.
