U.S. telecom company AT&T said on Saturday that it is investigating a dataset released on the "dark web" about two weeks ago. Its preliminary analysis indicates the data breach has impacted approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

It is not known if the data "originated from AT&T or one of its vendors," the company stated. The compromised data, from 2019 or earlier, does not appear to include financial information or call history. It may include email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, passcodes, and Social Security numbers.

AT&T has stated it does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting from the incident. The company reported the incident has not materially impacted its operations, and the data's source is still under assessment.

AT&T is in contact with all impacted individuals and has reset passcodes for 7.6 million current customers. It also stated it would offer credit monitoring services where applicable.

The wireless carrier's 5G network covers about 290 million people across the U.S.

This incident is not the first crisis this year for the Dallas-based company. An outage in February temporarily disrupted cellphone service for thousands of U.S. users, which AT&T attributed to a technical coding error, not a malicious attack.
