More than 50,000 people were displaced from Port-au-Prince within three weeks last month, fleeing gang violence in the Haitian capital, the United Nations said Tuesday.

Between March 8 and 27, 53,125 people left the city, according to a report from the UN's Interational Organization for Migration, joining the Caribbean nation's 116,000 people already displaced in recent months.   

Over the past several months, Haiti's conflict has been worsening as gangs vie for control of the capital, and the airport and main port has been repeatedly attacked, blocking access to key goods.

On Monday, panic set in around downtown Port-au-Prince as wild shooting filled the streets of Haiti's capital, with heavy gunfire near the national palace.

Meanwhile, the Caribbean country's health sector has also been severely affected by recent violence with at least half of the health facilities in the capital either closed or functioning below normal capacity.

Acording to local media on Monday, armed gangs in Haiti have taken control of the largest general hospital in the capital.
