Tottenham Hotspur missed out on their chance to beat Aston Villa to enter the Premier League top four after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham on Tuesday.

The Spurs are fifth with 57 points, two short of Villa, who will travel to Manchester City a day later. City, with 64 points, have a game in hand and are only three points short of leaders Liverpool.

Brennan Johnson put the visitors ahead only five minutes in, connecting with a low cross from Timo Werner to score from close range in a quick counterattack.

West Ham's Kurt Zouma quickly canceled the deficit in the 19th minute with a header in the crowded box.

Both sides upped their attacking game and felt they could find a winner, leaving much space behind. The Spurs went on to dominate possession and reacted much better in defense than when they conceded the equalizer. But West Ham were also active, creating chances, including an aggressive free-kick from James Ward-Prowse toward the top right-hand corner that was denied by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The home side again had a chance to score at the one-hour mark, when Michail Antonio outraced a returned Micky Van de Ven, who came off the bench after being rested for a hamstring injury, but he wasn't able to make it past Vicario.

Also on Tuesday, Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semifinal, thanks to goals from Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic in the second half.
