Beijing city walk: Explore hidden gems in old hutong

As Qingming Festival marks the perfect time for a spring outing, taking a city walk is  a trendy way to experience urban culture at this time of the year. Join me for a stroll around some of the capital's storied hutong and discover some lesser known but worthwhile places to visit along the way.

We start near Miaoying Temple's white pagoda in the heart of Beijing.

The whole neighborhood exudes a casual-yet-artsy atmosphere, with cafes and creative boutique shops tucked away in narrow hutong alleyways.

I've found the best place to take in some of the sights while enjoying a splendid view.

After refueling, we head to our next stop – the Zhengyang Bookstore hidden in an ancient courtyard.

What sets it apart from other bookstores is that it's situated alongside the Pagoda of Monk Wansong, which was built over 800 years ago.

The mottled old door panels, ancient stone piers, and the old maps of Beijing hung on the walls take you back in time, as you gain a deeper understanding of the city's profound history.

And we have the privilege of meeting our felin "shopkeeper" Lai Fu.

Although it enjoys sunbathing in the courtyard from time to time, Lai Fu's favorite spot is by the window inside this unique bookstore.

It's the one and only bookstore in the city that dedicates its entire inventory to Beijing-related books and historical documents.

You can find nearly anything you want to know about the city here.

And if you think this tour is all about nostalgia and the traditional side of the city, our final destination will surprise you.

With its elaborate Gothic marble facade, Xishiku Catholic Church stands in stark contrast to the surrounding hutong.

Its architecture is a perfect blend of the Western Gothic style and a traditional Chinese imperial garden. Many trendy young people choose this place to tie the knot with their partner.

Inside, the golden roof and the windows with their colorful-inlaid glass immerse you in a solemn, religious atmosphere.

So with my body exercised and my soul renewed, I wrap up the day's walk.

I've discovered some new sides of the city I've lived in for more than a decade and taken some great photos to reminisce over. So, keep exploring, and keep wandering. Until next time!
