On south China's tropical island of Hainan, there is a native rabbit species – the Hainan hare. It's the smallest rabbit in China; its body length is less than 40 centimeters and it weighs only 1.5 kilograms. The Hainan hare was included in China's List of National Key Protected Species in 2021.
