Five people have died after taking a dietary supplement produced by Japanese company Kobayashi Pharmaceutical.
Japanese economist Hidetoshi Tashiro said the scandal has exposed flaws in the company's family-run corporate governance structure and deficiencies in Japan's Foods with Function Claims system.
