Heze was named as the "peony capital of China" by the China Flower Association in 2012 and the flower was selected as the national flower by the association in 2019. The Caozhou Peony Garden is one of nine major peony gardens built in Heze for sightseeing. In Heze City, peonies come in nine major color series, 10 types and over 1,200 varieties, making it the world's largest base for peony breeding, cultivation, research, processing, export and appreciation.
