Located in the northeastern Windward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Dominica is an island country with a population of less than 100,000 people mainly dependent on agriculture and increasingly on tourism, as the government seeks to promote Dominica as an "ecotourism" destination. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the country's agricultural sector and caused damage to all of the country's transportation and physical infrastructure. China stepped in and helped turn round the economy for the better. In this edition of Leaders Talk, CMG's Wang Guan sat down with Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica, during his official visit to China from March 23 to 29, to discuss how China and Dominica can further enhance cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative in agriculture and healthcare. Skerrit commends China for assisting Dominica and the Caribbean to tackle climate change, which poses "a real existential threat," and build resilience with renewables. "China is a true friend to Dominica," Skerrit says, praising Chinese President Xi Jinping's vision and initiatives.
