Everton suffered a two-point deduction in the Premier League by an independent panel for breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSRs), the English top league announced on Monday.

"Over a three-day hearing last month, the independent Commission heard evidence and arguments from the club in respect of a range of potential mitigating factors for its admitted breach of £16.6 million, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges," the Premier League said in a statement. "Having done so, the Commission determined the appropriate sanction to be a two-point deduction, taking effect immediately."

This punishment resulted in Everton dropping by one place to No. 16 on the table, only two points above the relegation zone. They had already been docked six points in November 2023 for breaching the PSR for the first time. The original penalty of 10 points was reduced to six upon appeal.

The latest punishment for Everton would have been worse since the commission had a five-point reduction at first on their mind. However, since the club had already been disciplined for some of the rule-breaking years and admitted early their behaviors, the penalty was eventually two points.

"Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied," Everton said in their statement. "The Club would like to place on record its thanks to the Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups for their submissions during this process, and to all Evertonians for their ongoing patience and unstinting support. The Club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission's decision."

Nottingham Forest, which also struggle to stay in the Premier League, were charged with a breach of PSRs in January as well. Having been docked four points in March, they are in the 17th place on the table, two points behind Everton.
