Meet the 'sunflower' that blooms in ice and snow

CGTN

00:37

On the shore of Xingkai Lake in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, where ice has not yet completely melted, small but bright yellow spring flowers are blooming in clusters in ice and snow.

Amur adonis, also known as "Binglinghua" in Chinese, blooms earlier than other plants in the cold spring and stands out against the white snow and dark soil. It usually takes about five years for an Amur adonis to grow from a seed to a flower.

These plants are avid lovers of sunlight. They bloom in the daytime and close their petals at night or on cloudy days. The best time to see them is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Due to the cold temperatures this year, the yellow flower in the region started to bloom about 10 days later than previous years, and they will continue to bloom into May.
