This Champions League season took an unexpected turn, didn't it? The group stage and round of 16 were rather dreary, lacking that spark and pizzazz we've come to expect from the pinnacle of club football. Sure, there were a few fleeting moments of brilliance, but for the most part, it was a mundane and predictable affair. We can't say fans were overly impressed, to be honest. The matchups were a mix of lopsided contests and lackluster clashes between sides that have been off their game this season.

But lo and behold, the first legs of the quarterfinals on Tuesday night had a different tale to tell. At the illustrious Santiago Bernabeu, reigning champions Manchester City clashed with Real Madrid in an electrifying encounter that ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, and let's not forget the battle at the Emirates, where Arsenal fought tooth and nail to come back from a 2-1 deficit against Bayern Munich, both sides feeling hard done by as their penalty appeals were waved away.

The encounter in Madrid was a game of countless twists and turns. There were moments where it seemed like City could overpower Real, followed by moments where Real looked poised to dominate City. The pendulum swung back and forth.

City started with a bang, taking the lead just 95 seconds into the game thanks to Bernardo Silva's goal. However, their joy was short-lived as they found themselves trailing 2-1 after an unfortunate own goal from Ruben Dias and a deflected finish from Rodrygo within a mere 114 seconds. But City showed resilience and fought back, taking the lead once again with two splendid goals in the second half, courtesy of Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol.

Just when it appeared that City had completed an incredible turnaround, Real delivered a timely reminder of their unparalleled prowess. Fede Valverde sealed the night with a stunning volley, capping off an intense, nerve-wracking, and emotionally charged affair. Given the history of these teams, the only thing missing was a late winner, a jaw-dropping finale that would leave us all breathless.

The spectacle in North London was also a gripping one. Mikel Arteta, the mastermind behind Arsenal's tactics, had called upon his squad to exhibit courage and personality, and they did not disappoint. While the night may not have ended in complete satisfaction for the hosts, the Gunners demonstrated that they could go toe-to-toe with Bayern, refusing to be intimidated by their reputation.

Arteta's side may not have been at their fluent best, but they managed to make the perfect start. After just 12 minutes, Bukayo Saka's composed finish gave them the lead. However, Bayern quickly turned the tide before halftime, showing their quality despite their struggles in the Bundesliga. Former Arsenal star Serge Gnabry found the back of the net to equalize just six minutes later.

Then came the pivotal moment when William Saliba fouled Leroy Sane at the end of an amazing run, resulting in a penalty for Bayern. England captain Harry Kane stepped up confidently, converting the penalty to score his 15th goal in 20 appearances against Arsenal. It seemed that Bayern would have the last laugh, but substitute Leandro Trossard had other plans. With a well-timed lay-off from Gabriel Jesus, the Belgian forward unleashed a low, first-time finish that proved too good for Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern will leave London with a sense of contentment, knowing that a victory on their home turf at the Allianz Arena would secure their place in the semifinals. But Arsenal will not indulge in self-flagellation. They managed to salvage a commendable draw, leaving the tie delicately poised and offering them ample room to excel. The burning question now is whether Arsenal possess the character and determination to navigate this treacherous path.

As the dust settles and the echoes of these thrilling ties fade away, it becomes evident that these two blockbuster classics have breathed new life into the Champions League, injecting it with the drama and excitement fans have longed for. Who knows what surprises lie ahead in the second legs? One thing's for certain: the drama is far from over, the showpiece of football has yet to reveal its final act.
