Organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, China's 40th Antarctic expedition set off from east China's Shanghai Municipality on November 1, 2023. The expedition team, consisting of more than 460 members from over 80 institutions, traveled more than 30,000 nautical miles during a roughly five-month voyage.

The Antarctic expedition was for the first time supported by three vessels- two polar icebreakers the Xuelong and the Xuelong-2, and a cargo ship named Tianhui.

The Xuelong 2 icebreaker arrived in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday, and will be open to the public till Friday.

Despite an adverse environment, the team completed various tasks during the expedition, including the construction of the Qinling Station, the country's fifth scientific outpost and third research station on the continent that can operate all year round.
