History-maker Zhang Zhizhen blazes new tennis trails at Monte Carlo Masters

Zhang Zhizhen was acutely aware that his shot at making a breakthrough at the Monte Carlo Masters was a rare stroke of luck. The clay season's first ATP 1000 event had never featured a player from the Chinese mainland in its main draw, and it seemed destined to remain that way until Rafael Nadal's untimely withdrawal due to injury. However, fate intervened, and Zhang found himself as the Spanish legend's replacement.  

Eager to make the most of this unexpected chance, Zhang showcased his exceptional form and unyielding spirit against Marcos Giron on Tuesday. In a hard-fought battle, Zhang emerged triumphant with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over the American. 

This historic result not only marked Zhang as the first player from the Chinese mainland to progress to the second round of this prestigious tournament but also further cemented the 27-year-old's burgeoning reputation on the international tennis scene.

Unfazed by the incessant rain that caused significant delays to the match, Zhang remained undaunted in his pursuit of victory. With a fearless display of aggression, he set the tone early on by breaking Marcos Giron's first service game, ultimately claiming the opening set with a comfortable 6-4 scoreline.  

The second set proved to be a more intense battle, as Zhang secured an early break in the third game, only to face a swift response from his opponent, who leveled the score at 2-2 by breaking back. Unfortunately, Zhang momentarily lost his composure, allowing Giron to surge ahead with two consecutive love games, securing a 4-2 lead. Despite his best efforts to mount a comeback, Zhang was unable to regain his footing and succumbed to a 6-3 loss in the second set.

However, demonstrating his unwavering determination, Zhang entered the deciding set with renewed focus. Both players held their serves tightly, creating a tense and fiercely contested face-off. It was in the sixth game that Zhang managed to break the deadlock, capturing a pivotal advantage and forging a 4-2 lead. From there, he exhibited an air of self-possession, maintaining his dominance to ultimately claim the set 6-3 and secure a well-deserved win.

The triumph serves as yet another remarkable milestone in Zhang's already sensational career, which has been adorned with a breathtaking array of "firsts." It all began with his historic victory as the first male singles player from the Chinese mainland to triumph at the French Open.  

This groundbreaking achievement fueled Zhang's strength of character, propelling him to continue carving his legacy. He went on to become the first male player from the Chinese mainland to secure a coveted place in the main draw of Wimbledon during the Open era. Unyielding in his pursuit of greatness, Zhang shattered more barriers by becoming the first representative from the Chinese mainland to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event and ascend into the top 50 rankings. Adding to his marvelous list of accomplishments, he blazed a trail by capturing the tennis gold medal as the first male singles winner from the Chinese mainland at the Asian Games in 29 years.
