Heze was named the "peony capital of China" by the China Flower Association in 2012 and the flower was selected as the national flower by the association in 2019. The Caozhou Peony Garden is one of nine major peony gardens in Heze where tourists can enjoy the wonders of nature. There, peonies come in nine major colors, 10 types and over 1,200 varieties, making the city the world's largest base for peony breeding, cultivation, research, processing, export and appreciation.
