A monumental collaboration is expected to further unite China and Italy through the medium of classical music and opera education. Renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti is set to inaugurate the first-ever "Chinese-Italian Opera Academy" in Suzhou later this year. The initiative was announced at a press conference at the Cultural Institute of the Embassy of Italy in Beijing earlier this month.
Muti will spearhead the ambitious program in partnership with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, directly mentoring aspiring young musicians in China.
Federico Roberto Antonelli, Director of the Cultural Institute of Embassy of Italy in China said: "This is a very important project. First of all, because Riccardo Muti is a very famous musician and conductor in the world. He can play a key role in promoting the relationship between Chinese and Italian artists."
From November 21 to December 13, Muti will hold a masterclass workshop in Suzhou. Five young conductors, handpicked by the maestro, will work closely with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra to thoroughly prepare a concert rendition of Pietro Mascagni's acclaimed opera "Cavalleria Rusticana."
Chen Long, Chairman of Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, believes this program represents a valuable learning opportunity for young people, particularly those with a passion for music.
Chen Guangxian, General Manager of Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, said: "Given his advanced age, the academy is indeed a remarkable accomplishment. Through this initiative, he is passing on and amplifying the very core of Italian operatic tradition, allowing young musicians to grasp its true nature."
Chen Guangxian added that this program will serve as a powerful catalyst for fostering friendship and stimulating the multifaceted development between the two countries.
