This was part of a series of folk events held at the park to mark the Shangsi Festival. Also known as Double Third Festival, this ancient Chinese festival is celebrated on the third day of the third month of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which falls on April 11 this year. Other events staged at the park included lion dances and Sichuan Opera performances.

In ancient times, people would hold a sacrificial ceremony on a riverbank on this day to honor their ancestors, and then bathe in the river with herbs to cleanse themselves. Young people would then go for a spring outing. Nowadays, people take a trip to the water, have a picnic and pick orchids to celebrate the festival.

The day is also traditionally considered to be a possible birthday of the Yellow Emperor, who is considered as one of the common ancestors of all Chinese people.

In 2018, the day was designated as Chinese National Costume Day to promote Chinese culture.
