One Chinese national was killed and another one injured in the stabbing incident in Sydney on Saturday, Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney confirmed to China Media Group on Sunday.

The consulate-general expressed sympathy and condolences over the incident. It said it has contacted the families of the deceased and injured Chinese nationals and will maintain communication with them, as well as the relevant Chinese and Australian departments to provide assistance for follow-up matters.

A total of six people were killed after the stabbing at Westfield Shopping Center at Bondi Junction in Sydney. Local police said the offender, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi from Queensland, was known to authorities in his home state of New South Wales (NSW) and suffered from mental health issues.

Emergency services were called to the shopping center Saturday afternoon following reports that multiple people had been stabbed before a police officer on the scene shot Cauchi dead.
