At least 29 leftist insurgents, better known as Naxals, were killed in a fierce gunfight with government forces on Tuesday in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, local media reported.
Local police previously set the toll at 18.
The gunfight between Naxals and joint contingents of the police's District Reserve Guard and paramilitary Border Security Force broke out in the Chhotebethiya area of Kanker district, about 264 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.
According to the police, the gunfight broke out after contingents of police cordoned off the area based on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of Naxals.
Currently, Naxal insurgents are active across the central and eastern parts of India. The insurgency has reportedly claimed hundreds of lives, besides rendering thousands of poor inhabitants homeless.
India's former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh once termed the Naxalite movement as India's "greatest internal security challenge."
