These precious cultural relics are considered treasures in China that reflect the country's rich history and culture. The trend of repatriating artworks serves to help preserve a country's cultural heritage. Officials from both sides agreed that the return of the objects will strengthen mutual respect and inject vitality to China-U.S. relations.

The two countries have been proactively cooperating in the tracing, recovery and return of stolen cultural relics. China and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at preventing the illegal importation of Chinese cultural artifacts into the United States in January 2009. Its validity has been extended for a third time, starting from January 14 this year.
