In China's long history of peony culture, the peony has been given the spiritual connotation of wealth, auspiciousness and prosperity. Guyu, or Grain Rain, marks a significant period in the traditional Chinese calendar. As the sixth of the 24 Solar Terms, Guyu usually falls around April 20 and lasts until the beginning of May. "Only the peony is really a national beauty, with its bloom shocking the capital." This line from a poem by Liu Yuxi vividly presented the beauty of peonies and the crowds in the capital who were eager to see them.
