China firmly supports Palestine in becoming a full member of the United Nations (UN), and will continue to work with all related parties to play a constructive role in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza at an early date, and promoting the implementation of the two-state solution, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

According to reports, the United States on Thursday voted against a Palestinian request for full UN membership at the Security Council. The draft resolution recommending to the 193-member UN General Assembly that "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the UN" failed to be adopted due to the exclusive veto of the U.S.

At a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China's permanent representative to the UN elaborated on China's stance in his speech after the vote.

The establishment of an independent state has been the long-cherished wish of the Palestinian people for generations, and formally joining the UN is a key step in this historical process, Lin noted.

Because of the veto by the U.S., the application by Palestine for full membership at the UN has been rejected, and the decades-long dream of the Palestinian people ruthlessly dashed, said Lin.

Despite the U.S. veto, the urgent demand of the people in the region for an immediate ceasefire cannot be denied, and the basic needs of Gaza civilians for humanitarian assistance cannot be denied, Lin said.

He called on the international community to fully implement relevant resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, fully respect the will of the Palestinian people, return to the right track of the two-state solution and establish an independent Palestinian state as soon as possible.
