Clean-up efforts underway after record rains hammer Guangdong

02:40

Clean-up efforts are underway after torrential rains battered south China over the weekend. In Guangdong, flooding claimed four lives as of April 23. Three of the deaths were reported in the city of Zhaoqing. On Tuesday, schools and markets across the city reopened, but some low-lying areas are still facing power outages. The county of Huaiji in the north of Zhaoqing saw water climbing to levels unseen since 1955. Residents had been evacuated ahead of time, but businesses are still reeling from the damage. Torrential rains have pounded the Beihe River in the past week, leaving a trail of destruction across Guangdong and forcing up to 110,000 people to evacuate. Heavy rains are expected to return later in the week, raising risks of waterlogging, flash floods and mudslides.
