April 23 is World Book and Copyright Day. The latest National Reading Survey published by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication showed that 81.9 percent of Chinese adults have a reading habit.
The survey indicated that Chinese adults read an average of 4.75 printed books and 3.4 digital books per capita last year. A Chinese adult spent over three hours on average on digital reading per day in 2023.
Over 30 percent of both Chinese adults and minors aged 0-17 listen to audiobooks. About 36.3 percent of Chinese adults read by listening to audiobooks in 2023. About 33.1 percent of minors aged 0-17 read by listening to audiobooks last year.
The reading rate of minors aged 9-13 is close to 100 percent, while the reading rate of minors aged 0-17 stood at 86.2 percent. The survey, the 21st of its kind, started in August 2023 and includes 173 cities across the country.
