The UN's senior humanitarian coordinator for Gaza said time is ticking and the future of many is "hanging in the balance" as the agency continues to work amid difficult circumstances in the region.
On April 24, in a briefing to the UN Security Council, Sigrid Kaag, the UN's senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza, painted a picture of what her team has seen on the ground: death, destruction, hunger, disease and a breakdown of civil order. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said it is deploying two reserve brigades for missions in the Gaza Strip.
The announcement on April 24 came as Israel prepared for a ground invasion of Rafah, the southern Gaza city that Israel says is Hamas' last major stronghold.
