Explore Asian art with Guimet Museum's president

In the city of Paris, the Guimet Museum, also known as the National Museum of Asian Arts, is famous for its rich collection of Asian artifacts. CGTN recently interviewed Yannick Lintz, president of the museum, discussing the museum’s pivotal role in advancing cultural exchanges and mutual learning in contemporary society. 

During a recent visit to China, Lintz visited Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai to help deepen her understanding of Chinese culture and art. She offered her insight into the invaluable Asian artifacts showcased at the museum, and the museum’s forthcoming celebrations this year, which marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between China and France.

During the interview, Lintz underscored the significance of the museum's Chinese collection, which comprises over 20,000 objects. From ancient bronze artifacts to Tang Dynasty (618-907) treasures and exquisite porcelain and ceramics, the Guimet Museum's collection offers a glimpse into China's rich artistic heritage. Through these artworks, visitors can explore Chinese techniques, materials, and aesthetics, gaining insights into China's cultural and artistic identity.

Lintz explained that the museum has had a role in shaping Western understanding of Asian cultures. While acknowledging the differences in aesthetics between China and the West, she emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration between museums and cultural institutions worldwide.

As museums evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century, Lintz explained that cultural institutions face both challenges and opportunities. With plans afoot for a major renovation at the Guimet Museum, she said there is a need to adapt to changing audience preferences and incorporate digital tools and innovative exhibition strategies to attract younger generations of visitors.
