The Chinese mainland on Saturday said it stands ready to donate prefabricated houses to the earthquake-stricken area in Hualien County of the Taiwan region.

A magnitude-7.3 earthquake jolted the sea area near Hualien on April 3, followed by multiple aftershocks. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck sea area off Hualien County at 2:49 a.m. Saturday.

In a statement, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the mainland is ready to provide assistance after learning that those affected by the earthquakes in Hualien hope to have early access to stable, convenient and comfortable prefabricated houses.

The mainland will donate relevant materials through the Red Cross organizations on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, said Zhu, adding that she hopes they can be delivered to those in need as soon as possible.

"Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to the Chinese nation and are one family," she said.

In the face of major natural disasters, those on both sides have always helped each other and overcome difficulties together, she added.
